Please join the Board for breakfast on April 20th, 2006 and listen to this month’s topic:  Supplemental Military Leave Pay. Our speaker this month will review and clarify the rather confusing rules and issues involved when employers elect to continue paying workers who are called to active or reserve duty in the armed forces. In addition, we will have a round table discussion on how other employers in our area are handling this issue.

Thomas M. Hughes is an attorney with the Minneapolis law firm of Felhaber, Larson, Fenlon & Vogt, P.A., where he practices in the areas of employee benefits, compensation and business law.  He assists employers with military leave and employee benefit questions.  He has over 20 years experience in the design, drafting, administration and compliance of employee benefit plans.  Mr. Hughes has assisted clients with pension, profit sharing, 401(k) plans, employee stock ownership plans, cafeteria plans, deferred compensation, health and welfare programs (both insured and self-insured), multiemployer, and other collectively bargained plans.  He has been retained by attorneys and accountants for his expertise on employee benefit plan issues, including fiduciary liability, bankruptcy and complex plan qualification issues.  Mr. Hughes frequently serves as a neutral or an expert on employee benefit plan matters in family law cases involving retirement benefits.

He received his B.A. degree, cum laude, in business management from the University of St. Thomas and J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School.  Mr. Hughes is a frequent speaker and writer on employee benefit issues.  He is a member of the American, Minnesota and Hennepin County bar associations, the Minnesota State Bar Employee Benefits and Family Law Sections, the ESOP Association and The Midwest Pension Conference
