The Northstar News
Reported by Patrick White, CPP President Sharlene Smith opened the December 18th meeting at 8am. There were 62 attendees. She began with two appropriate quotes for the day, relating to teamwork: “Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together.” and “A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction!”
Sharlene’s first order of business was to announce the recipient of the chapter’s 2003 Payroll Woman of the Year award—SHERI BECK CPP! Sheri has been a Northstar board member for two years. She has chaired two very successful annual statewide payroll conferences, as well as one National Payroll Week program. She taught for several years at Century College, and has done consulting work in the payroll field. According to past President Denise McMahon, “Sheri was active in our chapter off and on. But she sat at my table one day and I simply asked if she’d be interested [in a larger role]. Then Marsha [Smith] kicked in and before we know it she agreed to be Conference chair and Education chair. I think that is what impressed me about Sheri. She is very dedicated to her profession and to the group. She has never said ‘NO’ to me. She has great ideas and isn’t afraid to use them, which is extremely refreshing.” After Sheri graciously accepted her award, Sharlene made a few general announcements. She reminded everyone that there is no meeting scheduled for January—the next meeting is on February 19th. She also noted that the chapter is offering large discounts on APA books and CDs, and that detailed information will be available on the website within a few days (as of this writing, the information is now available online). The deadline to order materials is January 23rd, 2004. Vice President Karen Klein spoke about our December community outreach effort, Toys for Tots. She noted that this effort presents our chapter the opportunity to give to our community during the holiday season, and thanked everyone for supporting the cause. Meeting attendees really responded to the donation effort this month. A special table was totally covered with unwrapped toys, which ended up filling four huge sacks! All of the toys were brought to local collection sites after the meeting. After the announcements, Program chair Barb Muellerleile introduced the topic speaker, Jamie Post, Human Resources Generalist at ProStaff, who talked about Team Building. Along with the talk, attendees participated in an actual team building exercise at their tables….collectively building a “skyscraper” out of dry spaghetti noodles and marshmallows!
