General Session - Jill Spiegel

Called "infectiously charming and energetic" by People Magazine, Jill Spiegel, founder of Goal Getters, is an entrepreneur, award-winning speaker and best-selling author of Flirting for Success, Flirting with Spirituality and the Pocket Pep Talk. In addition to her popular seminars, Jill is a media favorite who appears on radio and television internationally including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show and Britain's This Morning.

Living her flirting philosophy, Jill drives a decorated Beetle called a Flirtmobile. She explains, "Life is about celebrating and following your spirit." In Spiegel, that's the spirit of the entrepreneur. Taking after her great great grandfather, Spiegel Catalog founder Joseph Spiegel, Jill, along with her husband/business partner Joe Brozic, keeps Goal Getters ongoing projects thriving. Luncheon Session - Dr. Mari Shaw

Dr. Shaw is the current Business Education/Technology instructor for the K-12 WRACS School District in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.  For the previous 10 years, she served as the administrator of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s satellite campus in the State of Washington.

Through Dr. Shaw’s personal business, M. S. Enterprises, she serves as an educational and training consultant for public and private sector organizations, teaching, courses in Instructional Systems Design, Occupational Analysis, Curriculum Development, Methods and Materials for Instruction, Business and Industry Partnerships, Grantsmanship, Performance Consulting and Technical Writing.  She has a passion for teaching and learning and integrates learning/ styles’ strategies into all her training courses.  She also conducts seminars in team-building through mind styles and assists organizations in achieving productive team outcomes.  Having formerly served as the Director of Business Education for the State of Washington, she is extremely familiar with state department regulations and methods of delivering training in a federal, state and local government setting.

Dr. Shaw earned her Ph.D. in Educational and Workforce Administration at the University of Minnesota; a Master’s Degree was earned in Business Education and Vocational Competencies at Mankato State University; and a Bachelor of Science Degree at Valley City State University in North Dakota.  Her undergraduate course work includes:  Comprehensive Business Education, Vocational Competencies and Workforce Education and Development with emphasis in Accounting and Payroll.  She attended 14 universities as a student and currently serves as adjunct faculty for seven institutions.  She resides in Lake Arrowhead with her spouse and two doggies—Dudli Do and Addie SIU.  She and her spouse have 4 children and 10.5 grandchildren.

Breakout Sessions A & D - Caryn G. Pass

Ms. Pass is a founding partner at the labor, employment and immigration law firm of Krupin O’Brien LLC where she practices employment and labor law.  Ms. Pass represents many national and international businesses, counseling on appropriate employment procedures.  She represents businesses all across the United States, advising on federal and state labor, employment and personnel law issues and defending them before administrative agencies and in court proceedings. 

Well versed in employment discrimination issues, wage and hour practices, the termination and discipline of employees as well as the defense of  wrongful termination and discrimination claims, Ms. Pass has advised clients in virtually every facet of employment and labor law including: the drafting and revising of employment handbooks and employment applications; the drafting and revising of policies addressing Family and Medical Leave Act compliance; the termination and discipline of employees; the evaluation and review process; the implementation of prevention plans to avoid sexual harassment; glass ceiling issues; and, the investigation of claims of discrimination.  Ms. Pass’ particular area of specialization is in federal and state wage and hour laws.  She regularly advises clients in compliance requirements, conducts internal wage and hour audits of practices utilized by employers and assists companies in the defense of Department of Labor audits. 

Ms. Pass has been invited by numerous associations, Human Resources groups as well as clients to conduct presentations and workshops wage and hour laws, management training skills and other employment issues.  She is a regular presenter at the National Society for Human Resource Management's Annual International Conference.  Ms. Pass is regularly quoted in publications where she addresses questions of wage and hour, Family and Medical Leave and other employment law matters.   In addition, Ms. Pass is the founder of the Washington Women Personnel Professionals Employment Law Network.  Ms. Pass holds a Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a B.A. from the University of Maryland.

Breakout Session C - Pam Becker

Pam Becker is a Marketing Operations Project Manager with Deluxe Corporation. Pam received her masters certificate in project management through The George Washington University in February, 2000. Some of the key projects she has managed during the past 6 years are;

The Y2K project which consisted of developing a process to reinstall the compliant mainframe applications and managing all third party software packages within the corporation to be compliant.

Managing the implementation of an outsourcing vendor within the organization.

bullet

Managing the creation and development of an XP computer image for the personal computers within the corporation and implementing that operating system to key functional areas.

bullet

Through her passion and strong believes in project management, has most recently managed the development of an internal project management training curriculum for over 100+ internal resources.  Facilitated each of these training sessions.

Breakout Session E - Robin Murphy, CPP

Robin Murphy, CPP is the Payroll Manager for Deluxe Corporation, headquartered in Shoreview, Minnesota.  Robin has 26 years with Deluxe, 10 of those years were in payroll.  She has experienced implementations of many new systems (i.e. accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, HR, time collection and multiple payroll systems-most recently SAP payroll).

Robin currently serves as the Government Liaison for the Northstar Chapter of the APA, but has also held the positions of Secretary, Historian, Director of Communications, Vice President and President.  Robin facilitated a CPP study group in 1995 and received her Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification along with the rest of her study group.

Robin has attended Anoka Ramsey Community College and the College of St. Catherine with an emphasis on Business Management.

Breakout Session F - Bruce Beckman, CPP

Bruce Beckman is currently employed by Mincom, Inc. as a Payroll and Human Resources Implementation Consultant for the Utility vertical.  Prior to joining Mincom, Bruce was President of Beckman Consulting, specializing in payroll tax law compliance, audits, and system implementation.  He has also worked as a Senior Application Consultant for Sage-Best Software, Inc., Payroll Manager for a financial services company in Minneapolis MN, and was employed in the Public Utility Industry for over 20 years, during which time he was involved in several acquisitions and mergers, as well as the creation of new nonregulated companies, which are becoming the norm in the age of deregulation of utilities.

Bruce is a member of the APA's Hotline Referral Service, National Speakers Bureau, Certification Advisory Group, and the APA President's Board of Advisors.  He has been a speaker at the APA's annual Congress and Special Payroll Symposium for many years as well as a contributing writer to membership publications.  He taught the APA's Payroll Professional Learning Series at Century College in White Bear Lake MN for three years, and played a major role in designing additional questions and student guidelines for the 2000 edition of the PPLS.  He received a Meritorious Service Award from the APA in 2001.

Bruce holds a BA in Accounting and Business Administration from Metropolitan State University.
